The next level in versatility

Multi-Activity Vehicle concept

Above all, the Mazda5 Multi-Activity Vehicle (MAV) is designed for carrying lots of people. It can carry your family and friends - and has plenty of room for luggage. But by reconsidering the Mazda5's role, by really thinking through what this car could offer, we've taken the people carrier concept on to the next level. That's how we arrived at our Mazda5 with seating for up to seven, with the addition of a first - Karakuri Seating design.

This Karakuri Seating system is unique. Yes, you can carry seven adults. But the choice of not having a seventh seat creates more space for the other passengers. And this open space leaves more room for stowage - and means the Mazda5 has a more open environment in every way.

In the past, Compact MAV cars have focused on either practicality and functionality or styling and performance - but not both. Now, for the first time in this class, the Mazda5 balances these two requirements. On the one hand you have a wide range of seating and carrying options, an interior where form isn't sacrificed for function. And on the other, you've still got a stylish, easy-on-the-eye Compact MAV that offers an outstanding driving experience.

Flexibility

Taking the whole family away on holiday, the daily commute to work or a night out with your friends - one thing is for certain: the Mazda5 is a Multi-Activity Vehicle that is flexible enough to meet the differing needs of modern day lifestyles.

With our unique Karakuri Seating system you can carry up to seven people. And, by freeing up its seventh seat the Mazda5 has really opened up interior space. Relaxed conversation can flow more easily, all the more so with class-leading roominess for first-, second- and third-row occupants.

And we've also designed the tailgate with ease of opening in mind. It opens smoothly, is very light and has a two-stage opening system - perfect for people of all heights. There's also a concealed sub-trunk to store valuables away from prying eyes or to protect third row seatbacks from muddy items - The Mazda5 is certainly flexible enough to rise to any challenge.

Luggage

To get the most from a Compact MAV, you need to have an adaptable, versatile interior that can be used for almost anything. The Mazda5 perfectly combines luggage-carrying capability with passenger comfort. 'Flexible luggage space' is an understatement. With all seven people on board you can still fit in a folded stroller and two crates of bottled drinks. Or alternatively, you can fit in two sets of golf bags - remove the lid of the boot compartment and a 9-inch golf bag can be loaded sideways! And less people means loads more room, especially with 50:50 third row seat split that further extends your floor options. For even more room, one simple tug of a strap will fold the seats flat and there's no need to remove the head rests.

Loading up for a holiday, helping relatives move, even the school run - with full sports bags for all the kids - these things could not be easier. The rear tailgate has two stopping positions and is made of lightweight plastic enabling the tailgate to be pulled down in one easy movement. Plus there are innovative twin sliding rear doors which provide easier access to the 2nd & 3rd row seats

Karakuri concept

Comfort and practicality are the key themes with Mazda5 seats. With the industry premier of the Karakuri Seating concept, whereby you can add a seventh seat in a matter of seconds, this is a Multi-Activity Vehicle with multi-purpose uses. The Karakuri centre seat can also be adapted to provide an arm rest or it can be lifted sideways to provide a walk through to the rear seats.

Every seat has an adjustable headrest and ample cushion width. They disperse your bodyweight, offering lower back support - perfect for long journeys.

The idea of 'flexibility' is central to the Mazda5's seating arrangements. These can be adjusted to suit any particular purpose: first rows can move forwards and backwards. Our double-folding second row seats can be smoothly and easily adjusted and, with their best-in-class slide range, you've plenty of room to sit in comfort. Wherever you're travelling to, driving there in a Mazda5 will be a lot of fun. Plus you, your family and your friends will finish relaxed, at ease and refreshed by your journey.

Sliding doors

When it comes to putting your best foot forward with the new Mazda5, we put ourselves in our drivers' shoes - and those of their passengers. And while our sliding doors are perhaps the most eye-catching feature, your Mazda5 is full of touches that help make everyone's access easier.

The Mazda5 is the only car in this segment to benefit from rear sliding doors on both sides. They're light, easy to use and the advantages are huge. A special mechanism has been put in place to stop the doors from opening when the petrol cap is open and with a 700mm opening there are no more difficulties exiting when it's a tight squeeze; and parents can be sure that kids won't scratch other cars by opening the doors. And no more difficulty with manoeuvring child seats in or out when you've only got limited room. Now, you can step in or out in most situations - especially with our wide, low steps to help you.

Once inside, you needn't clamber around things. The second-row seats have a one-touch walk-in mechanism and a simple one-handed action will lower seats in an easy, smooth movement. Plus the large gap to the third row is the widest in its class. The seat cushion side supports? They're tuned so that they won't get in your way. Smooth, unimpeded access, that's what our designers had in mind.
