Shutdown of 2G and 3G Networks in Europe

Important Information:
Shutdown of 2G and 3G Networks in Europe

OMobile network operators across Europe are gradually shutting down 2G (GSM) and 3G (UMTS) networks as part of a transition to faster, more advanced technologies like 4G and 5G. These changes are being driven by national mobile network operators in each country and are not controlled by Mazda or other vehicle manufacturers.

What does this mean for you?

The shutdown of 2G and 3G networks impacts the eCall* system of certain Mazda vehicles. The country in which you bought your Mazda vehicle is not decisive, your Mazda vehicle is also affected if you drive to or through areas where 2G and 3G networks are no longer available.

What is changing with eCall*?

The eCall* system, which automatically or manually contacts emergency services in the event of a serious accident, will be affected by the shutdown of 2G and 3G networks. This applies to vehicles equipped with an eCall* system that relies exclusively on 2G or 3G networks. The eCall* system has historically relied on 2G or 3G networks. This was in line with EU Regulation (EU) 2018/858, which required manufacturers to use these technologies until the end of 2024 and continued to permit their use thereafter – in some cases – until the end of 2027. As a result, all Mazda vehicles currently in use are equipped with eCall* systems that depend solely on these technologies. With the deactivation of 2G/3G networks by national mobile network operators, the eCall* system in these vehicles will no longer be able to connect to emergency services in areas affected by the shutdown of 2G and 3G networks, although these vehicles fully complied with legal requirements at the time of type approval.

The eCall* system in the following Mazda vehicles is affected by the shutdown of 2G and 3G networks:

• Mazda2 Hybrid; Start of production: December 2021

• Mazda3; Start of production: November 2018

• Mazda6e; Start of production: March 2025

• Mazda MX-30 & MX-30 REV; Start of production: May 2020

• Mazda CX-30; Start of production: April 2019

• Mazda CX-60; Start of production: June 2022

• Mazda CX-80; Start of production: June 2024

Timelines vary by national mobile network operators

Because each national mobile network operator manages its own shutdown schedule, we recommend checking your national mobile network operator’s website for specific dates. At Mazda, we are committed to keeping our customers informed and supported as the digital landscape evolves. If you have any questions or concerns about how this transition may affect your vehicle, please contact your local Mazda Customer Assistance Centre.

*Due to the gradual shutdown of 2G and 3G networks, the availability of the eCall feature will be affected in certain countries. Service availability depends on local mobile network operators, and may therefore vary by market
